About this work
Trellis is a large-scale architectural installation by artist Cath Campbell, commissioned for Wyng Gardens student halls of residence, by Trinity Hall College at Cambridge University.
Continuing Campbell’s practice of working with functional objects to intervene in architectural space, this work transforms a timber trellis at the front elevation of the building into an elaborate and flamboyant sculptural form.
The work begins as a typical timber trellis structure on the ground floor, then twists and loops around itself as it ascends to create an intricate and baroque form that reaches across all four floors of the building.
Made from steam-bent oak, the work has been slowly and carefully manipulated through a series of tight rolls, creating a layering of curved forms against the geometric latticework of the trellis, pushing the technical possibilities of the material to its limits.
The artwork is designed to become a part of the small gardens to the front of the building, and will support a miniature rose bush that will climb the structure to a height of around four metres.
