Miko Veldkamp
About this work
At the centre of this painting, a group of cyclists make their way under an arched bridge, of the kind regularly seen in Central Park, NYC; either side of the bike path, the ground is orange, the colour of typical Surinamese soil; the bicycles themselves remind the viewer of dutch streets full of cyclists. Veldkamp allows for a multiplicity of place within his compositions by blending disparate visual motifs; the end result is that he creates psychological, dreamlike landscapes composed of both his memories and immediate surroundings.
A self-portrait of the artist occupies the foreground at the bottom-left of the painting. The figure is so far into the foreground that he seems to be removed from the scene itself, like he’s spectating or overlooking from afar.
