About this work
With a focus on painting’s intersections with cinema, photography and music, Rachel Lancaster edits and translates photographic ‘stills’ into oil paintings, from found moving imagery and her own photographs. She depicts detailed fragments divorced from greater narratives, rendering these fragments both descriptive and abstract, ambiguous and open-ended.
Characteristically, ‘Untitled’ is a fragment of a larger image. By remaking the image in paint, and omitting the subject’s context and identity, Lancaster draws out the uncanny and psychological charge of her source imagery; here, she manipulates cropping, colour and mark-making to play on the latent otherness and dreamlike qualities encountered in both photography and painting.
