 (1981) by Thomas Ruff is a vertical chromogenic print from the Interieurs series (1979–1983), presented as a small, hand-sized image centered within a wide white mat and a narrow warm-wood frame. The photograph stages a tightly cropped bedroom: a bed with a saturated mustard bedspread occupies the foreground; to its right a bedside table and wardrobe read as vertical planes; a low shelf holds small objects and several framed pictures; a muted red carpet grounds the scene. The framing is frontal and insistently measured—the print’s modest scale and generous matting compel the viewer to step back and regard the scene as an object rather than a vignette of private life.

Ruff’s control of colour and viewpoint does the work here. Ochres and honeyed wood tones cluster across middle distances so that the mustard of the bedspread becomes a dominant plane; against the pale wallpaper and the white mat, these warm accents compress pictorial depth and turn furniture and accessories into flat, repeating motifs. The camera’s dead-on, close crop excludes peripheral anecdote; small framed photographs on the shelf are trimmed to rectangles that read like specimens. In this register, the image begins to read less as a personal interior than as a recorded type: a domestic room reduced to its compositional elements.

Seen alongside Ruff’s later enlargements and digitally altered series, 

 signals an early insistence on photographic grammar—scale, crop and calibrated colour—as instruments of meaning. Institutions have collected and shown work from the Interieurs (for example, holdings and exhibition histories at Centre Pompidou and K20), but the photograph’s lasting effect is tactile and formal: a private room reconfigured into a modest, exact study of how photographs make interiors legible.
