Recorded 02/11/2010 Start: 11.40 am End: 3.25 pm Interval: 4 sec Slice Maps are a series of archival high-resolution digital prints on acid free matt cotton paper. Based on a new digital photography method developed for the project, the Slice Maps render specific public locations in time into abstract images which clearly evoke the recorded movement of people through locations. A special high-resolution digital camera records a horizontal slice of space (one pixel high) in regular intervals over a predefined period of time. Each of the ‘slices’ is then stacked to form the Slice Map, the vertical axis representing time, the horizontal axis represents the area over which the camera can view. Due to these factors each Slice Map is unique. The project is concerned with time and the use of the space rather than the topography of the place. Time is traced by human activity (the movements of people, the traffic, etc), as well as natural changes (clouds, sun light, etc).
