Up To The Light

 (2026) is an intimate, vertically oriented oil on canvas (50 x 40 cm) that shows the back of a blonde woman’s head and shoulders cropped so close that hair texture, a dark-brown clip and a saturated red shoulder dominate the field. Lancaster builds the image through successive thin glazes on a bright ground; blended transitions and feathered edges soften contours until the weave of the canvas becomes legible at close range. Set against a cool mid‑grey ground, the composition privileges surface and material particulars over facial identification, converting a conventional portrait into a fragmentary vignette that reads as a memory-scrape: domestic and tactile, yet quietly distanced.

Placed within Lancaster’s ongoing project of translating analogue cinematic stills into paint, the work amplifies the halation and colour-time of pre‑digital image cultures—the hazy saturation of VHS-era B‑movies—while insisting on painterly latency. The omission of the face redirects attention to how paint accrues psychological charge in minor details—the way a hair clip anchors a composition, how a red garment becomes a cipher of warmth or threat. Lancaster’s incremental glazing, and her preference for passing shots and cropped framings, align her with recent photoreferenced figuration that fragments identification to open narrative possibilities; the effect is neither illustration nor reportage but a suspended affective zone where surface, light and omission do the narrating. Seen alongside works from recent series that dwell on backlit domestic scenes, 

 stages an economy of attention: small, concentrated pictorial choices that make cinematic noise legible as a painterly atmosphere rather than a fixed story.
